Getting there
Four ways to Notting Hill Carnival
Central Line — best option
Central line direct to Notting Hill Gate — your main option. Runs from Oxford Circus (10 min), Liverpool Street (22 min) and Shepherd's Bush. The station stays open but gets overwhelmed — arrive early.
Direct from Central LondonCircle / District to Notting Hill Gate
Circle and District lines also serve Notting Hill Gate. Useful from Paddington (10 min), Victoria (15 min) and beyond. Note: Latimer Road, Westbourne Park and Royal Oak on these lines are closed.
From Paddington, Victoria, or eastBakerloo Line to Queen's Park
Queen's Park is on the Bakerloo line and Overground — a great northern approach that most visitors overlook. Shorter queues and a 20-minute walk south into the carnival route.
From Paddington or Oxford CircusWalk from Shepherd's Bush
Shepherd's Bush (Central line + Overground) is 20 minutes on foot into the heart of Carnival. Excellent for post-event escapes — walk west against the crowd flow and get a much shorter queue.
20 min walk — great exit routeTiming & tactics
Arrive, enjoy, and get home safely
Before you arrive
- Check TfL closures: On the morning of each day — closures are confirmed late and change year to year
- Before midday (Sunday): Family Day is quieter — arrive early for the best experience
- Before 1pm (Monday): Grand Parade builds quickly. Get in before the main rush
- Comfortable shoes: You will walk several miles on hard pavement. No exceptions.
- Bring cash: Many food and drink traders are cash-only
After Carnival
- Avoid 5–7pm: Notting Hill Gate is overwhelmed — queues can exceed 45 minutes
- Wait it out: Find a pub, wait until 7:30pm+ — queues clear dramatically
- Walk west: Shepherd's Bush (20 min walk) — much shorter Central line queues
- Walk east: High Street Kensington (20 min) — usually manageable
- Night buses: Often easier than the tube at carnival — buses run throughout
Local tip: the Queen's Park approach
Coming from north or east London? Queen's Park (Bakerloo + Overground) is consistently overlooked and sees a fraction of the post-carnival crush compared to Notting Hill Gate.
Stay safe
Carnival safety essentials
Secure your valuables
Use inside pockets or a small crossbody bag. Minimise what you carry.
Keep bags small
Large bags will be searched by police at entry points — don't bring unnecessarily large items.
Family areas
Designated family areas are clearly signposted along the route — look for the yellow markers.
First aid posts
Ambulance and first aid posts are stationed throughout the route — look for the green crosses.
Poor mobile signal
Signal can be very poor in dense crowds. Agree a meeting point with your group before entering.
Stay hydrated
Buy water from official stalls — the August heat combined with dense crowds makes hydration critical.
Station by station
Which station to use and when
Open stations only — closed stations (Latimer Road, Westbourne Park, Royal Oak, Ladbroke Grove, Kensal Green) are not listed.
