Stamford Bridge
Travel Guide

Fulham Broadway is right there — but 40,000 people all leaving at once on a small District line station needs a plan. The quieter exits, live line status and the walk most fans don't bother with.

Getting there

Three ways to Stamford Bridge

🟢

District Line (direct)

Fulham Broadway is direct from Victoria (12 min), Sloane Square (8 min), Earls Court (5 min) and Embankment (15 min). It's the go-to for almost everyone — trains run frequently, no changes needed from most central London stations.

🟠

West Brompton (Overground)

An 8-minute walk west of the ground, West Brompton is served by the London Overground towards Clapham Junction and Shepherd's Bush. Dramatically quieter than Fulham Broadway post-match — the extra walk is absolutely worth it after a big game.

🟠

Imperial Wharf (Overground)

A 12-minute walk south, Imperial Wharf connects to Clapham Junction (one stop) for National Rail and Victoria line connections. Good option if you're heading south of the river or to Gatwick. Very few match-goers use it.

🔵

Earl's Court (District + Piccadilly)

Earl's Court is a 15-minute walk north — not ideal for match day but useful if the District line is disrupted. Both the Piccadilly and District lines serve it, giving you far more route options than Fulham Broadway alone.

Backup if District is disrupted

Timing & tactics

Beat the Fulham Broadway crush

Before kick-off

  • 60+ min before: Relaxed — Fulham Broadway quiet, pubs open on Fulham Road
  • 45 min before: Busy but fine — trains running well, short waits at Fulham Broadway
  • 20 min before: Getting hectic — queues outside Fulham Broadway station
  • 5 min before: Sprint job — don't bother with the pub, go straight to the ground

After the final whistle

  • Best option: Walk 8 min to West Brompton — Overground is quiet and fast
  • Option 2: Wait 20 min in a pub on Fulham Road — queues clear quickly
  • Option 3: Walk to Imperial Wharf (12 min) — Clapham Jct in one stop
  • ⚠ Avoid: Fulham Broadway immediately after — squeezes 40k fans through a tiny station

Insider tip: the Earl's Court flip

Board the District line eastbound at Fulham Broadway but get off at Earl's Court immediately — then catch a westbound Piccadilly train. Bypasses the District line slowdown and gets you moving faster if heading west.

District line disruption warning

The District line sees weekend engineering work more than most lines. Always check TfL before leaving — if it's disrupted, Earls Court (Piccadilly line) is your best backup. The Overground at West Brompton runs independently and is rarely affected.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Which station is closest to Stamford Bridge?

Fulham Broadway (District line) is the closest station at around a 5-minute walk — exit onto the Fulham Road and the ground is directly ahead. Almost everyone uses it, which means the District line is very crowded on match days.

How long does it take to leave Stamford Bridge after a match?

Is there an alternative to Fulham Broadway?

Yes — West Brompton (8 min walk) is served by both the District line and the London Overground (Clapham Junction direction). Imperial Wharf (Overground, 12 min walk) is also an option for heading south. Both are dramatically quieter than Fulham Broadway after the final whistle.

Is Stamford Bridge easy to get to from Central London?

Very. The District line runs direct from Victoria (12 min), Sloane Square (8 min), Embankment (15 min) and Earls Court (5 min). No changes needed from most south and west London locations.
